We install heat pumps right across Lower Hutt: Petone, Alicetown, Naenae, Taita, Stokes Valley, Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. The valley floor holds damp, the inland suburbs frost hard, and homes near the harbour cop salt air. We size and site each system for those conditions, and we fit all major brands.

The Hutt Valley is one of the areas we serve across greater Wellington, and it's a part of the region we know well. Fitting and sizing a system here is the same careful job as our wider heat pump installation in Wellington, tuned to how valley homes behave in winter.

What Lower Hutt homes are up against

The valley floor sits low and flat, and a lot of it is built on old riverbed and reclaimed ground near the Hutt River and Wellington Harbour. That means damp that hangs around, especially in older Petone and Alicetown villas with timber floors and not much subfloor airflow. A heat pump that runs warm and dry is the cheapest way to sort that, and getting the capacity right matters, because a damp room needs a bit of extra grunt to feel comfortable.

Head inland and it's a different story. Wainuiomata and the upper parts of Stokes Valley sit in cold pockets that frost hard on still winter mornings. We make sure the unit we put in holds its output when the temperature drops outside, rather than fading just when you need it.

Coastal Eastbourne and the bays

Out along the eastern bays through Petone foreshore, Seaview and Eastbourne, salt air is the thing to plan for. Over time, salt eats away at an outdoor unit that's been badly chosen or badly sited. We position the outdoor unit to keep it out of the worst of the salt and, for homes close to the water, we'll go with models that have better-protected coil coatings so they last.

Older villas, state homes and newer townhouses

Lower Hutt is a real mix: pre-war villas and bungalows around Petone and Alicetown, big pockets of mid-century state housing through Naenae, Taita and Epuni, and a growing number of new townhouses. They all heat differently. The villas usually want more capacity for their volume and glazing, while the newer, tighter homes often need less than people think. We size on the actual room, not a rule of thumb.

Whole-home options for valley houses

Plenty of Hutt homes are single-level on a decent footprint, which makes them good candidates for a ducted heat pump system that heats the whole house from one hidden unit. For one or two rooms, a standard high-wall split is the simpler, cheaper answer. We'll tell you honestly which suits your layout, and you can check the numbers against our heat pump installation cost guide. A lot of the valley's pre-2008 homes are exactly the stock the grant targets, so it's worth checking whether you qualify for the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant as well.

Brands we fit in Lower Hutt

We recommend on merit, not on a dealer target. For cold inland suburbs we often suggest a strong cold-climate performer like Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps, while for coastal homes the corrosion-resistant build of some Fujitsu heat pumps can be a good fit. We fit all five major brands.

Suburbs we cover in Lower Hutt

Across the valley, we get to all of it.

Down on the harbour flat, Petone, Alicetown, Moera, Korokoro, Seaview and Gracefield mix old foreshore villas with a light-industrial edge, and the damp sits low here. Through the central valley, Naenae, Taita, Avalon, Epuni, Waterloo and Woburn are heavy on mid-century homes that warm up nicely once the unit's sized right.

Up on the western hill, Maungaraki, Normandale and Belmont catch more wind and a better view, with longer pipe runs to plan for. Over the eastern bays, Eastbourne and Days Bay sit right on the water, so salt air drives the outdoor unit choice.

And out on their own, Wainuiomata over the hill and Stokes Valley to the north frost the hardest, so we pick units that hold their output in the cold.

Nearby areas we cover

We also install just over the hill and up the line. If you're further north, see heat pump installation in Upper Hutt; to the west, heat pump installation in Porirua; and up the coast, heat pump installation on the Kapiti Coast.
